Orphaned opossums: what to do if you find one

Opossums are an interesting lot: they have an absurd name, are immune to venoms, play dead when in danger and are one of the most hated creatures in all of America. However, at its core, an opossum is just another animal which is vulnerable to all sorts of misfortunes that can plague other members of the animal kingdom.

One such misfortune is getting orphaned, and aside from being a seriously heart-breaking thing to happen, it can be notoriously tricky for us humans to deal with it.

That is mostly because of the lack of knowledge that the masses have concerning opossum behavior, and it can help to learn about the right steps to take should you encounter an orphaned opossum.

Learn to identify orphaned opossums
Young opossums can be recognized by their long whiskers, pink nose and sparse coat of awn hair. Once you find one, you should search the surrounding area for more of them. They make “sneezing” sounds when they are calling their mother, which can help you identify if they are present nearby.

Provide warmth
Young opossums left on their own are prone to experiencing a drop in body temperature and generally feeling cold, so you should warm them gently right away. Carefully wrap a soft cloth around them and hold them against your body to transfer your body heat. Once they are sufficiently warm, place them in a box or any other suitable container. If possible, line the inside of the container with cotton or fleece, before placing the opossum in it. It is best not to use terry cloth for handling an opossum, as the threads can get wrapped around its tail or toes. T-shirts and blankets are ideal options.

Hydrate them
Young opossums in such a condition are also vulnerable to dehydration, as they can’t access water sources on their own. Therefore, you should provide it with clean water as soon as possible. Gently hold its mouth in one hand, keeping it open if you have to, and with the other hand tip a water container slowly so that the water trickles down its throat.

Get professional help
No man is an island, and that is true when one is dealing with orphaned opossums as well. It’s inadvisable to attempt to heal it or do anything else that you have no experience in since it might end up making things a lot worse. Instead, you should contact a wildlife rehabilitator, vet or state department of animal control for guidance and help. Getting in touch with organizations such as Opossum Society of the United States (OSUS) and National Opossum Society is also recommended.
